OAKWOOD, Ga. (May 13, 2008) –Wayne Farms LLC invited members of local law enforcement to the company’s Oakwood facility earlier this month for a tour and a special training session on ammonia, a common chemical found in many household and industrial cleaners and a key ingredient in the production of methamphetamine. Thirteen members of the Oakwood Police Department visited the plant to learn about proper handling of ammonia and health hazards associated with the chemical. Bob Boren, area compliance manger, and Gerald Kowalke, plant manager, led the tour and discussion on ammonia. “Our company, like many other manufacturers, uses ammonia in our daily operations,” said Boren. “We’re thrilled that we were able to share some useful information with these officers and hope that, because of this training, they will be better equipped when dealing with industrial accidents or illegal methamphetamine production.”Ammonia is generally harmless in low levels. However, exposure to high levels of ammonia in the air can irritate skin, eyes, throat, and lungs and can cause coughing and burns. Permanent lung damage and death may occur after exposure to very high concentrations. The Oakwood facility is a 43,000 square-foot further processing plant and has been owned and operated by Wayne Farms LLC since 1985.
