DOUGLAS, Ga. (May 21, 2008)—Employees from Wayne Farms LLC’s Douglas facility have something to crow about this spring – the company is currently leading all other Coffee County Relay for Life teams in dollars raised for the American Cancer Society (ACS). To date, the Wayne Farms team has collected $10,613.82 to help the organization research the causes and treatments of cancer and ease the pain and suffering endured by cancer victims and their families. The company joined 27 other local teams (more than 600 participants and cancer survivors) at the Coffee County Relay for Life event April 25 at the Coffee Pre-K Academy track in Douglas. 50 Wayne Farms team members attended the walk, but all of the company’s more than 150 employees participated in fundraising efforts throughout the past year. 2008 marks the facility’s fourth year of participation in Relay for Life, and enthusiasm from the company’s employees gets stronger every year. “I’m so proud of the efforts and passion of our employees,” said Matt Mitchell, Wayne Farms operations manager. “Every employee was involved in this initiative and our level of success is a true tribute to the dedication of the employees at our facility.” In addition to holding the top fundraising spot, the Wayne Farms team earned several special awards including Best Campsite, in recognition of their impressive chicken-themed tent which sported slogans such as “Cluck out cancer!,” and Best Banner. These awards, and several others, will be presented at the May 20 Relay for Life Wrap-Up party at the American Legion in Douglas. Coffee County Relay teams have thus far raised a total of more than $100,000, but only three other individual local teams have passed the $10,000 mark: Ambrose Elementary School ($10,244.88), Indian Creek Elementary School ($10,199.22) and Pilgrim’s Pride ($10,016.24). Wayne Farms’ Douglas facility is a 160,000 square-foot further processing facility and has been owned an operated by Wayne Farms since 1997. The facility employs more than 150 people from Irwin, Ben Hill, Bacon, Coffee, Atkinson and Jeff Davis Counties. About Wayne Farms LLC Wayne Farms LLC is the fifth-largest vertically integrated poultry producer in the United States with annual sales exceeding $1 billion. About Relay for Life Relay for Life is an annual fundraising initiative of the American Cancer Society. The first team Relay was held in 1986, and was the brainchild of Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Washington colorectal surgeon who wanted to find a way for everyone to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those lost and get inspired to fight back. Since that first event, millions of people around the world have participated in Relay for Life, making it the largest fundraising event in history.
